Originally Seneca Aviation Inc. the club was formed in the late 80's at Fingerlakes Regional Airport. FLAPS has been flying Piper aircraft since it's inception, first with N2346T and now N555JM!

The path to earning your Private Pilot License (PPL) is an exciting adventure. Here's what to expect:

1 Discovery Flight

Your journey begins with a discovery flight. Experience the thrill of flying firsthand and get a taste of what pilot training involves.

At FLAPS, your discovery flight will be in our Piper Warrior with one of our experienced instructors.

2 Medical Certificate

You'll need to obtain a 3rd class medical certificate from an FAA-designated Aviation Medical Examiner (AME).

This simple exam ensures you meet the basic health standards for safe flying.

3 Ground School

Learn the essential knowledge needed to become a pilot. Topics include aerodynamics, weather, navigation, regulations, and aircraft systems.

Options include in-person classes, online courses, or self-study with your instructor's guidance.

4 Flight Training

The exciting part! You'll learn to fly through dual instruction with your CFI and eventually progress to solo flights.

Training covers everything from basic maneuvers to cross-country navigation and emergency procedures.

5 Knowledge Test

Pass the FAA Private Pilot Knowledge Test, demonstrating your understanding of aviation concepts and regulations.

Your ground school and study materials will prepare you well for this computer-based exam.

6 Checkride

The final step! The checkride consists of an oral exam and flight test with an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner.

Upon successful completion, you'll earn your Private Pilot License and can take friends and family flying!

Is your club right for me if I'm already a licensed pilot?

Absolutely! Many of our members are licensed pilots who joined for affordable access to an aircraft, to build hours, or simply to enjoy recreational flying.
